About Susan James
Susan James is a fiber artist living in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania. A member of the Lake Erie Fiber Guild, Susan graduated from Edinboro University of PA with BFA and MFA degrees in Weaving and Fibers. With my fiber works the intent is to capture a feeling of movement through time and space. In her weavings, she has used traditional colonial pattern weaving along with Ikat dye technique to arrive at multidimensional qualities. For the most part starting with white yarn, and then through dying and weaving I have created the fabric “from scratch”. Color and pattern selection were chosen with consideration to achieve a development of depth. This feeling of depth then has been further enhanced considering light and negative space in the final off-loom manipulations such as wall hanging art pieces for home décor, or wearables. Most recently, I have begun using manufactured fabrics and already woven yardage, adding the color to them by fabric painting.
